What Coaching Has Taught Us.
Mom's Version: My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD about 9 years ago. We have tried many different approaches to homework and to organizing her things without success. If something worked it was temporary. Homework if it was done was lost, tests forgotten until test day, project papers found a few days before the project was due. Her school grades were not good. Homework was a nightmare. My daughter and I were beyond frustrated. We both knew she was capable of more, but we just didn't know how to get there. Then came our answer - Coaching! My daughter learned what worked for her. We were on the same team, finally. Coaching was always positive. We watched my daughter become organized a little at a time, grades slowly got better, long term projects were done on time. Because tests were remembered there was study time and her test grades improved. My daughters self esteem sored with every good grade. We are still coaching and learning more every day. The focus is on how my daughters world works, not trying to fit her into some mold. She has learned many positive things about how her mind works and has used them to help her in many different areas of her life. Coaching has brought a close connection to my daughter and myself, better school grades, and less frustration for us both.
If you feel like you have tried everything to help your child with ADD/ADHD and still haven't seen results, then it's time to try Coaching. I wish we knew about this process years ago.
Daughter's Version: (Carolyne 14 years old): I like that my mom and I don't argue the way we used to about homework. My mom and I are a team. It's nice to spend time together that's always happy and positive.
I make my own goals from what I think is important. I'm learning what works in my brain, not what people tell me will work.
Coaching has helped me to find a lot of new ideas that help me to remember things. My grades are better since we started coaching.
Thank you Joanne and Jen for changing our world!
"I first began to understand a condition that I have lived with my whole life after talking with Joanne Carnevale about struggles I was having with my daughter Zoe. Zoe was exhibiting symptoms of ADD ~ difficulty following directions at home, and unable to process information at school. I thought I had a kid who wouldn’t “pay attention,” and my efforts to change this attitude included screaming in frustration, and trying to shame her in to compliance.
As a result I was creating a child with low self esteem, who didn’t understand why she “didn’t understand.” She was barely getting by at school, being passed to the next grade each year due more to her easygoing attitude and endearing personality than to her scholastic aptitude. At first I balked at the suggestion of ADD or ADHD because I knew nothing about these conditions, and assumed they constituted an excuse for habitually bad behavior. When I started to educate myself about the condition a light bulb went off. I started seeing symptoms that I had experienced my entire life.
Through learning to Coach with Joanne and Jennifer we started to take the huge task of living life and break it down in to small goals that we set daily. The next day when we reviewed our goals and the methods that we had outlined to help us reach them, we were able to see how well we had planned, and assess where we had fallen short. The coaching method helps people whose brains don’t automatically make lists and track their behavior throughout the day, by teaching them to break down, organize, and implement change in their lives. Zoe and I have experienced a “reset” in our brains. We have learned to set small tasks for ourselves, to think through the steps required for success, and anticipate and plan for obstacles.
I recommend Coaching for any parent seeking to teach their child successful life skills, or for any person ready to make positive changes in behavior patterns." ~ M.A.
"I sought Jen Mauro’s expertise because my hard work, love of learning, and commitment to success were not paying off with good grades. Jen taught me that there are many ways in which people learn and retain information. She catered her work specifically to my learning disability. The payoff was fantastic. I began to better organize my thoughts and surroundings, I worked more efficiently, felt less stressed, and more confident. Jen’s continued guidance and support helped me stay on track.
I feel that it’s important to have someone in your life that understands your learning differences; an accountability partner of sorts. A close friend or family member can be of great help.
